Japan’s Manga Publisher has highest gross earnings to date.

Posted on 03 February 2010 by admin

One of Japan’s top well known publisher, Shueisha Inc, has made a quite healthy pocket of profit during the year of 2009.

A very healthy one.

A whopping USD $759 million big ones to be precise! All the other manga publishers could not get remotely close to their latest figures.

Have a look here, the chart and you’ll see how Shueisha made such dramatic push of great results in making successful business.

If you’d ask me, I would have thought significant drop of DVD sales over that past year was the major reason it was doing too well.  That’s why they’ll getting further traction with these hence animation studios are losing out the big slice of that profit pie.  Big time!

Astro Boy promotions launched… Heading your way soon

Posted on 22 September 2009 by admin

Just catching up with this. Hong Kong computer animation studio company, IMAGI, just posted a new movie clip from the much-anticipated film (one of Osamu’s Tezuka’s beloved manga creations) Astro Boy in a movie fan site. However, I had trouble viewing its latest movie clip from Moviefone.com so I decided to flip over to Youtube and just “youtubed” for it….

Here’s the clip.

Looks very promising. 3D graphics rendering is certainly top-notch. And boy (no pun intended), is he ever going to face several challenging opponents of all shapes and sizes! The film is said to be released in Japan on October 10. The American release is set for October 23. So my guess is that its worldwide release date would categorically fall on the same date as the American counterpart, just like how they did with Transformers 2 earlier this year.

Oooh… only 4 weeks left to go… How excitingly close is that? :)

Now while you may be eargerly waiting. If you’re living in Japan, there’s a marine complex in Aichi prefecture that’s planning to host an Osamu Tesuka’s convention centre. And it’s not about the entire collection of his best anime works. It’s all about Astro Boy. There’s a 3-metre statue waiting there for the general public to see. The convention is called “Mighty Atom Exhibition in Lagunasia” where you will find all the amazing recreational activities that your family and kids can do everything from buying Astro boy’s merchandise, games, food, festivals, etc etc.

You can find out more about the exhibition on Laguna Gamagori’s website. What’s really interesting about the exhibit is if you look at the map section, there’s huge outline that resembles the dimensions of Astro Boy, proportionately! Each ‘part’ of Astro Boy’s limbs caters different functions and activities for family of all ages.

That’s a real looker.

This exhibit opens on 19th September and closes on 30th November. I’d love to go unfortunately, I don’t think I’ve enough to get me up to other places in Japan other than Tokyo city itself. So if you are living in the land of the rising sun, then what are you waiting for? Go see it!!

NB: On Laguna’s website, there’s also an English language link at the very top right hand side. This link will take you a pdf download page that has information brochures for you to download and read all about the complex before you start making your travel arrangements to get there.

Tetsujin 28 Giant Head – Ready for its close up!

Posted on 28 July 2009 by admin

Wow! This is it! The 2.5 metre-height of Mitsuteru Yokohama’s late Tetsujin 28’s head is now put on a public display. Well sort of, judging by the look of these pictures from CartoonLeap.com

The unveiling sure is a giveaway.  As this suggests the whole Tetsujin 28 construction is currently underway so what better way to generate public interests is to grant them a glimpse view of its incredibly believable head design of Tetsujin 28.

Tetsujin 28

It is a magnificent thing to view. Said to be weighing at least 50 tonnes. Considering all the parts they had to use to make his limbs less than 8 weeks ago, it would make a complete sense how the building engineers have come up with a  figure summed up like that!  The Kobe Project was estimated to be worth around 100 million yen to construct and build and most of these funds come from donations of individual and corporate firms.

It sure has come a long way since they began this project back in June.  But it’s worth the wait to see the finale of everything once its final construction gets done by September!  Fingers-crossed!!

Talented local NZ artists are just proving how good they can be compared to Japanese anime artists

NZ Doujin Overload 2009

Been meaning to post on Saturday evening, however it became such a mission for me to upload the photos on my Wordpress online, I realised this is not gonna be an easy 5 minute job…. And finally here I am.

This is something I dont’ see that often. For the past 15 years since I live in the ‘land of the long while cloud’, anime was word that’s unknown to many general people of NZ and certainly the contrast was incredibly obvious between my adopted country and home country of Malaysia, where anime is seen as a common household product in the neighbourhood of 20 million plus people. Here, to get a manga book was certainly a rarity for these and the closest thing you can ever find them (which I vaguely remember) is from a Taiwanese shop that sells parallel imported goods or from Taiwanese high school friends I used to went out with, and they get the latest trends of manga imports.

Now fast-forwarding the clock 15 years later…. Things have changed. It has changed a lot.

Thanks to the introduction of Pokemon and Dragonball Z into the NZ youth market towards late 90s, the anime space was exploding that was never seen before. It broke all barriers and soon many new young New Zealand fans are spreading the word of ‘anime’ in the community like wildfire. They learn many things about manga, otaku, shonen, doujinshi, cosplay and the culture of Japanese animation so quickly. I feel like I’m no longer a visitor to my new found homeland anymore.  Everything I do here is almost like being back at home! And what better way for them to get into this pop culture phenomenon, is to have our very own local anime convention centre in the Southern Hemisphere, right in the heart of Auckland City.

It’s probably our first anime convention centre ever in New Zealand’s history. At least, that’s what I found from this link at AnimeCons.com. So New Zealand has come a long way with this and we see a rising number of young fans that mould in very well in this array of ‘Japan-esque’ fun everything from dressing up your favourite anime characters as for eg Sailor moon to owning your very first 1/1 scale Mobile Gundam model! (I was kidding about the 1/1 scale part. Lol.)

Nevertheless, my curiosity for discovering the world of anime in New Zealand never dissipates so I decided to venture out on the quest to see just how much New Zealand as a whole learnt much about anime.

And after the first two hours of almost non-stop (well not really, I had to recharge my parking fare every hour (long story) so I had to rush out and rush back in) photo-taking, and a few hundred of photos later, and countless hours of uploading, here’s the entire album below.  Broken into 4 categories.

Note: It may take you a while to get used with this photo navigation setup. As you click one of the categories, a screen will refresh and the album disappears (!!) but the link to the gallery is there that says ‘Show Picture list’. Click on the link, you will have the overview of some of the photos previewed.  There’s an option for you to view the photos in a slideshow format, which is good since I have so many photos and it would be cumbersome to view the individually.  If you want to see other galleries of the original album, you must click the orginal link of this post so the album gets refreshed.

This is great start for New Zealand.  As I walked around the room, letting my curious gaze linger from one desk to another, prying on the marvellous artworks by these bright intelligent artists, who clearly show their desire and passion in drawing, I sense something’s good is bound to happen for these talented young guns.  I asked every person I met on each desk about their age and how long they love to drawing, and you hear the same answer over and over.  14-18 year olds love to drawing since they were little kids getting their first drawing pencils and continue to excel their ’scribbling’ into great works of anime/manga art.  They’re incredible, I tell you.  (which you will soon see after you look into my album).

They got a number of cosplays going on there from Japanese high-school outfits to one guy dressing up as Vincent, a character  from Final Fantasy VII.  Plenty of dances going on too (which I need to find the time to upload,  if I’m lucky enough to be busy).  And last, but not least, there’s a section of all mecha toys and models that I could finally find (YES!!!) in our local shores, ie no need for E-bay buying anymore for sure.   Apparently, NZ market is actually small so having a NZ as a young market for youth products like this is a foregone conclusion.  There’s still potential for this before we could rival our so-called “big brother” of the Oceania region and their much bigger show of anime. (see Youtube clip below).

At the end of the day, I did not go home empty-handed, for I certainly did make lot of purchases, if anything not overtly-exorbitant like buying myself a 1/1 Gundam model and put in my frontyard! I’m planning to post this on another page as there’s a lot of great material including magazine of Japan’s wonderful world of modelling hobby.

So stay tuned.

How’s this for an idea? A robot that actually makes all your morning coffees at your workplace?

Posted on 14 July 2009 by admin

That would be an awesome idea.  I mean it may not necessarily be practical to have it every morning just when you want to grab a quick coffee during your ten minute break, but it sure helps a lot just when you have days you just need to be lazy and want someone to do it for you.

Or in this case, it’s something.

robotcoffeemaker

This latest wacky invention from Japan has several AI programming nodes up in its circuits which will allow him to do all the steps required when making a great coffee. You can check the Youtube video from his post at Hardwaresphere.com and see how incredibly (in single quote) smart the robot really is when detecting the objects that it needs to make great cup of coffee. It’s utterly amazing to watch!

Getter Robo – the first Transformers before Transformers G1?

Posted on 28 May 2009 by admin

After Go Nagai’s great success with Mazinger Z, he went ahead to pursue making another great super robot classic series. And this time, it is about having three air units that can “combine” into a robot. In three different ways. I keep thinking of myself “Oh, really? How on earth could they design something like that?”. So I questioned my doubt. And my curiosity grew as I researched and found out the truth further on how three futuristic warplanes have the capability to ‘transform’ into 3 different robots, with each of them can perform unique functions that’s different to one another.

Though it’s part of Go Nagai’s signature, the majority of the credits go to Ken Ishikawa, Go Nagai’s protege. He was the one notably contributed the ideas on making Getter Robo series a running success after so many years since its Getter Robo days, including several re-incarnated series during the 90s and 00s like Shin Getter Robo, Neo Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, New Getter Robo etc. It ran as part of the manga series with its main publisher, Shonen between 1974 and 1975, covered in 5 volumes. It was later converted into TV series and it become another great mecha anime sensation again, for Go Nagai.

Getter Robo TV Series 70s

Getter Robo story begins with a story with a brilliant scientist by the name of Professor Saotome, who invented the three planes that come with hidden special abilities of thwarting the evil plots of their nemesis, Dinosaur King, from Dinosaur Empire. The special planes are powered by Getter Ray, a rare source of energy ray obtained from outer space, which were originally used for deep-space exploration of solar systems, galaxies and beyond. However, this scientific project was called and “redubbed” for far more important use as Earth’s greatest defense against the might of the invading Dinosaur Empire whose attempts are nothing short of evil ambitions to take over the world, for they claim to be the ‘true rulers‘ of Earth since they existed several million years ago.  As the story unfolds, we learned that Professor Saotome went on a hunt for three pilots who are capable of riding such scientifically sophisticated machines. So a talented martial artist(Ryoma Nagare), a delinquent loner(Hayato Jin) and a judo expert(Musashi Tomoe) were called upon to take up such honorary task to defend the Earth, and they learned the secret powers of their Getter planes.

Getter Robo battles with the Dinosaur Empire

This robot series was helmed as the first Super Robot anime in history that produced a groundbreaking concept of merging (or combining) units into one super robot. And not only one type of super robot can be formed but in three types! Each robot is unique in its own way to handle different situations/struggles our Getter heroes face in the heat of battle. I was pretty dissapointed the fact I remembered back in the early 80s as a kid there was Getter Robo G whose licencing rights were bought by American company Force Five Series and later relabelled as the Starvengers and I couldn’t comprehend why is that Getter Robo was never queued to broadcast in Malaysia before Getter Robo G. Was it because of no money, or demand for Japanese robot was nonexistent? It’s a mystery to me. Nevertheless, it’s good to know that after all these years I finally know the truth behind the great legend of that is Go Nagai’s Getter Robo.

Anyway, I digress. The concept of combining units is this (at least in Getter Robo Universe). Getter Robo has 3 transformations, Getter 1, Getter 2 and Getter 3.  The three planes are named Eagle (red plane), Jaguar (white plane) and Bear (yellow plane). Getter 1 transformation goes with Eagle jet, Jaguar jet and Bear Jet, in an order.  Getter 2 transformation goes with pushing the previous order ‘up’ having Jaguar first, Bear second and Eagle last.  And lastly Getter 3 transformation goes with pushing Getter 2’s order up having Bear first, Eagle second and Jaguar last.  Here’ the illustration

Getter 1

Getter 1 Transformation – In this order

Eagle + Jaguar + Bear = Getter 1

Getter 2

Getter 2 Transformation – In this order

Jaguar + Bear + Eagle = Getter 2

Getter 3

Getter 3 Transformation – In this order

Bear + Eagle + Jaguar = Getter 3

The 3 Getter Robo come with unique and amazing fight capabilities when facing tougher mechanical monsters dispatched by the Dinosaur Empire with notable signature attacks. Getter 1 being very agile with its Tomahawk, Getter 2 with its highly-powered drill arm that can penetrate on any type of surface, and lastly Getter-3 with its overly-stretchy arms that extend up to several hundred metres in range to grasp any opponent to do a ‘throw’ ie Hammer Throw (as Musashi’s a judo expert). And they’re all come together along with Professor Saotome’s support and his children, Michiru and Genki Saotome to thwart the evil attempts of Dinosaur Empire’s conquest for Earth domination.

And so there lies a question I’ve been meaning to ask myself about. Was Getter Robo considered as the first “Transformer” ever in the history before the prime days of Transformers G1 that took over USA and the rest of the world? Well. Yes and no, depending on how you look at it. Facts gathered that even though Getter Robo succeeded in combining three units into one large unit, and its morphing capabilities into 3 robots suggest transformation is the valid description for this. However, another angle pointed out that a true Transformer is really a robot that puts itself in disguise of any object, be it cars, radios, trucks, construction equipment or even your Iphone! They can transform into robots that hold all the properties of their respective disguises, which shapes their robotic appearance. It makes you think logically Transformers do what they always do best. They always put into disguise. And they can always transform back to being robots again. Whereas Getter Robo can’t. It couldn’t fit in this category because the three units were not ‘transformable’, separately. So there’s no way Getter Robo is truly the first Transformers, so to speak.

But then again, you could also argue that if Getter Robo did not introduce this ‘morphing’ capabilities in its series, then it would have not inspired other countless super robot anime artists who incorporated this element into their own robot shows and continue to thrive their imagination to take place. Meaning, the Transformers as we know today oughta give plenty of credit to Getter Robo for bringing its own existence, doesn’t it? I really do believe it should. After all, you’ll come to know there are other startling facts behind the Transformers that the Japanese did invented the Transformers, whereas USA was responsible for the branding behind the titular name (and the catchy opening music).

Later on, I’m planning to add further interesting details about the series in regard of the plot and character development, once I get the original classics on DVD release in my hands.  More to come.
